Yes. Maxem Health accepts Medicaid in the states it operates in, along with the managed care plans that administer it. The specific plan matters more than the word “Medicaid”, so here is the actual list.
Medicaid plans Maxem Health accepts
- Mississippi Medicaid
- Louisiana Medicaid
- LA Bayou Plans, including LHC, Amerihealth and Amerigroup
- Magnolia Health Plan
- Molina
- Healthy Blue
- Aetna Better Health
- All Well
- Ambetter and Ambetter from Magnolia Health
- Wellcare
- Community Plan (UHC)
Medicare, Medicare Rail Road, Aetna Medicare Supplement, Tricare and TriWest are also accepted. The full plan list covers commercial insurers as well.
If yours is not listed, call (228) 223-1927 before you travel.
Why the plan name matters more than the programme
Most Medicaid coverage is delivered through a managed care organisation rather than the state directly. Your card says Magnolia, Molina, Amerigroup or Healthy Blue, and that name is what determines network status, not the word Medicaid.
Check the card in your hand rather than assuming. If the plan on it does not appear above, one phone call settles it.
What Medicaid typically covers at urgent care
Medically necessary urgent care visits are generally covered, which spans most of what brings people in: illness including strep, flu, UTIs, ear and sinus infections, and injury including sprains, simple fractures, cuts and minor burns. On-site X-ray, EKG and rapid lab testing are part of the visit rather than a separate trip.
Coverage rules vary by state and plan. Some services, including DOT physicals, pre-employment physicals and drug screens among them, are employment-related rather than medical, and are generally not a Medicaid benefit. Maxem publishes flat prices for those: $100 for a DOT physical, $35 for a pre-employment physical, $50 for TB testing.
What to bring
- Your Medicaid or managed care plan card
- Photo ID
- A list of current medications and allergies
- For a child, immunisation records if you have them
No appointment is needed. Maxem clinics are walk-in seven days a week including holidays, and you can save your spot online first.
If you are between coverage
The Maxem Health Discount Program is available to people without insurance: $175 to set up for an individual, covering the first visit, then $60 per visit. It cannot be used with any U.S. government plan, so it is an alternative to Medicaid rather than something to layer on top of it.
When to skip urgent care and go to the ER
Urgent care is for problems that are not life threatening. Go to the emergency room or call 9-1-1 if you have any of the following:
- Severe chest pain
- Severe shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Suspected poisoning
- Severe abdominal pain
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Confusion or change in mental status
- Sudden fainting, dizziness, numbness or weakness
- Coughing or vomiting up blood
- Injury to head or neck
- Extreme high fever
If you are experiencing any of these, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not drive yourself.
