Workers’ Comp at Urgent Care: What Happens After an Injury

A workplace injury generates two problems at once: getting treated, and getting the paperwork right so the claim is not disputed later. Maxem Health handles both through a dedicated occupational health service.

What Maxem Health provides

Maxem’s workers’ compensation care assigns a case manager who keeps the employer and their insurer informed throughout. Specifically:

  • Initial care and evaluation of the injury
  • Follow-up care
  • Copies of workability documentation faxed to both the employer and the insurance company
  • Notification of any referral to a specialist, and the results of that visit
  • Notification when an employee fails to appear for a follow-up visit
  • On-site injury prevention

That reporting loop is the part most clinics do not publish, and it is the part that determines whether a claim proceeds smoothly.

What happens at the visit

Tell the front desk it is a work injury at check-in, before anything else. This routes the visit correctly from the start and prevents the bill going to your personal insurance, which is difficult to unwind afterwards.

Bring your employer’s name and contact details, any claim or incident number, and the name of their workers’ compensation carrier if you have it.

A provider evaluates the injury and treats what can be treated in-clinic. Maxem handles simple fractures with X-ray on site, sprains and strains, cuts and lacerations, minor burns, wound care, incision and drainage, splinting and crutch training, contusions and whiplash. On-site X-ray and EKG mean imaging happens during the visit rather than as a separate referral.

Workability documentation

You leave with a written statement of what you can and cannot do. Full duty, modified duty with specific restrictions, or off work entirely.

Read it before you leave and make sure the restrictions match what your job actually involves. “No lifting over 20 pounds” means something different on a loading dock than in an office, and a restriction written too vaguely creates a dispute later.

Copies go to your employer and their insurer through the case manager.

Follow-up matters more than people expect

Maxem notifies employers when an employee misses a follow-up appointment. That is not surveillance for its own sake. A gap in the treatment record is one of the most common reasons a claim gets challenged.

Attend the follow-ups. If you cannot make one, reschedule rather than skipping it.

When to skip urgent care and go to the ER

Urgent care handles work injuries that are not emergencies. Call 9-1-1 or go to the emergency room for:

  • Life-threatening conditions
  • Heart attack or stroke
  • Open fractures
  • Severe bleeding
  • Chest pain
  • Head injury or other major trauma
  • One-sided weakness or numbness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Severe abdominal pain

If you are experiencing any of these, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not drive yourself.

Also go straight to an emergency room for crush injuries, chemical exposure to the eyes, electrical injuries, and any injury where you are unsure how serious it is.

Who pays

Workers’ compensation covers treatment for a work-related injury, which is why routing the visit correctly at check-in matters. Note that workers’ compensation is excluded from the Maxem Health Discount Program. The claim pays, not the membership.

Employers can arrange occupational health services directly. Maxem’s contracts contact is published on the employer services page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go to urgent care for a work injury?

Yes, for injuries that are not emergencies. Maxem Health provides workers’ compensation care including initial evaluation, follow-up and reporting to your employer and their insurer.

What should I tell the clinic?

Say it is a work injury at check-in, and give your employer’s details, any claim or incident number, and the workers’ compensation carrier if you know it. This prevents the bill being routed to your personal insurance.

Will my employer be told what happened?

Your employer and their insurer receive workability documentation covering your ability to work and any restrictions, plus notification of specialist referrals and missed follow-ups.

What if I need a specialist?

Maxem notifies your employer of the referral and of the results of that visit, keeping the claim record continuous.
